Freedom within Limits

Montessori philosophy is freedom within limits, coordination, concentration, and independence. The key words are "freedom within limits." In order for the child to be successful at school, simple tasks should be done at home which allow the child more responsibilities and freedom. Some tasks can be: pouring his own milk, putting on her own shoes, choosing her own outfit (weather permitting choices), helping an adult make dinner, and making his bed. In order to provide your child more freedom, you may allow him to walk short distances by himself, to walk (and not be carried) down the hallway, and to climb, run, skip and jump outdoors etc. All of these suggestions will help your child build self-esteem, independence, coordination, and concentration.
